I Didn’t Know Writing Was Spiritual Warfare Until I Saw This in Esther
And Why You Must Write Like Lives Depend on It, Because They Do
It was the usual route to our church at the University of Ibadan, and I never paid much attention until that day. Erected at the roundabout was a signpost bearing the image of Nigeria’s only Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, along with a quote by him:
“Books and all forms of writing have always been objects of terror to those who seek to suppress truth.”
That statement stuck with me. I couldn’t shake it off. It lodged deep within my spirit and captured something I had also discovered in the Scriptures; something I now believe to be the ultimate purpose of writing.
The Enemy’s Agenda: Suppress the Truth
There is a coordinated effort to suppress the Truth. The enemy is doing everything he can to erase it. And if you’re a believer, you know the “Truth” is not just an idea, it is a Person. In John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”
From the very beginning, Satan has been on a mission to silence and destroy anything connected to the Truth. He plays the long game. He will stop at nothing to abort God’s plans.
A striking prototype of this is found in the book of Esther.
When Writing Becomes Warfare
Haman, the enemy of the Jews, conceived a plan to annihilate all the Jews in the land. He didn’t stop at just having the idea. He raised funds, secured the king’s approval, and then did something strategic.
“Then the king’s scribes were called on the thirteenth day of the first month, and a decree was written according to all that Haman commanded—to the king’s satraps, to the governors who were over each province, and to the officials of all people... In the name of King Ahasuerus it was written, and sealed with the king’s signet ring.” — Esther 3:12, NKJV
Haman wrote it. He published it. He disseminated it to every province. That’s a huge lesson for every writer: it’s not enough to write. You must intentionally send out your message and ensure it reaches everyone it is meant to help.
And here’s something critical: Haman’s idea only became powerful once it was written. That’s the power of writing; it gives form and force to thoughts, intentions, and desires. There is immense power in transferring what’s in your heart onto paper or screen.
By Esther 4:3, we read:
“And in every province where the king’s command and decree arrived, there was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting, weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.”
This is still happening today. That verse describes the state of many individuals, families, and nations. In countless homes, there is sorrow, suffering, and despair. Every day, we hear news of death, disease, destruction, depression, and debt—all reflections of what the enemy has written and is enforcing.
Satan is still on the prowl, destroying lives, homes, and destinies. There is deep evil on the earth.
Writing Outlives the Writer
Eventually, Esther’s intervention led to Haman’s execution. But note: Haman’s death did not automatically undo what he had written. The decree still stood. The Jews were still in danger.
That’s another thing about writing—its power outlives the writer. Writing is eternal. It continues to shape realities long after the author is gone; whether for good or evil.
The Esther Mandate: Write to Revoke the Enemy’s Letters
Esther understood this. She didn’t just stop with Haman’s death. She made another move:
“Now Esther spoke again to the king, fell down at his feet, and implored him with tears to counteract the evil of Haman the Agagite, and the scheme which he had devised against the Jews.” — Esther 8:3, NKJV
She specifically requested:
“If it pleases the king... let it be written to revoke the letters devised by Haman… which he wrote to annihilate the Jews.” — Esther 8:5, NKJV
That verse changed everything for me. It’s now the compelling reason why I write, and I believe it should become yours too.
Every Kingdom writer is called to write in order to revoke the letters devised by the enemy to destroy God’s people. You are not just a content creator. You are a counter-writer, called to undo, reverse, and cancel the schemes of darkness through the power of your pen. Each blog post, book, email, or caption you write must be driven by this vision.
When you write with this purpose, you are carrying on the mission of Jesus. As it is written:
“He wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us... and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.” — Colossians 2:14, NKJV
That’s exactly what Esther did. A new document was written and sent out to reverse the will of Haman. And what happened?
“The Jews had light and gladness, joy and honor. And in every province and city… the Jews had joy and gladness, a feast and a holiday. Then many of the people of the land became Jews, because fear of the Jews fell upon them.” — Esther 8:16–17, NKJV
Fasting turned into feasting. Mourning was replaced with joy. Weeping gave way to celebration. And best of all? Many people got converted.
Your Pen Has a Purpose
Haman is long dead. Esther is long gone. But the schemes of Satan remain. He is still working to obstruct God’s plan. And you? You have been raised for such a time as this.
You are God’s agent, positioned to stop the enemy in his tracks. Through the power of your pen, you are called to revoke what the enemy has written.
So I challenge you: pick up your pen, wield it like a sword and write with purpose. You may just be saving a generation. The world is groaning under the weight of words written by the enemy. It’s your turn to write what will set it free. Don’t delay, Heaven is waiting on your words.
